J.C. Ryle

"When a man’s heart is cold and unconcerned about religion – when his hands are never employed in doing God’s work – when his feet are not familiar with God’s ways – when his tongue is seldom or never used in prayer and praise – when his eyes are blind to the beauty of the kingdom of heaven – when his mind is full of the world, and has no room for spiritual things – when these marks are to be found in a man the word of the Bible is the right word to use about him, and that word is, ‘Dead.’”

State of Repentance

If you haven't read Part I - State of Examination please go back and read it (again if you need too). This message will not make much sense without Part I.

Part II - State of Repentance
"For Godly sorrow produces repentance to salvation"...
(2 Corinthians 7:10).

I have been a little slow in getting this part written because the Lord has been showing me so much. I am actually astounded and utterly speechless at the things He has been showing me! There is no way I can write about all of it here but I hope that I can touch on some of things that I have learned.

As mentioned in Part I, when I felt that I needed to examine my heart and make sure that my heart was 100% for the Lord, I was actually doing what Paul was reminding the church of Corinth to do -- to examine themselves. "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith, examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you -- unless indeed you FAIL the test?" (2 Corinthians 13:5).

When I did this, honestly with myself, I knew that I had failed. Why did I fail the test? Because I had sin in my life. I also had past sin that I had not confessed to him and completely repented. I am not talking about what by human definition would be called any major sin. That didn't matter anyway. When I sat quietly before the Lord and searched deep within my heart I knew that I had not been striving with everything in me to be blameless and free from sin. Sure I was going to the Lord with perhaps an acknowledgement that I had maybe sinned (the "I'm sorry" Lord prayers). But this in itself is not enough. This is not what the Lord requires that we do. He wants us broken hearted before Him. I was not making a conscious effort to STOP the sin in my thoughts before it became a reality. In God's eyes all sin is serious -- even the thoughts of sin. The knowledge of this left me broken and trembling before Him. "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling" (Philippians 2:12). I developed a deepened fear of God that swept over me like a tidal wave!

Dictionary.com defines repentance as "deep sorrow, compunction, or contrition for a past sin, wrong doing, or the like". I was explaining to Beth what true repentance means. I told her to think of it as though sin was a bomb in her hand and in order to get the sin out of her life she had to throw the bomb as far away from her as she could. But it wasn't enough to just throw the bomb. She also had to turn and run away from it as fast as she could or she would risk still being hit or tempted by it. Repentance is not slowly pushing the sin away and saying we are sorry, it is a complete turning away from what can kill us. It is running away from death!

Paul spoke about repentance when he was addressing the church (believers) at Corinth. "For I am afraid that perhaps when I come I may find you to be not what I wish and may be found by you to be not what you wish; that perhaps there may be strife, jealousy, angry tempers, disputes, slanders, gossip, arrogance, disturbances; I am afraid that when I come again my God may humiliate me before you, and I may mourn over many of those who have sinned in the past and not repented of the impurity, immorality and sensuality which they have practiced" (2 Corinthians 12:20-21).

Be careful! The Lord warns that His believers can be deceived and will fall away (1 Timothy 4:1). Oh, friends, be careful of the snares that can drag us away from the faith.

True salvation begins with repentance.

Salvation is not offered or covered by a sinner's prayer.

For we are not born again in Him if we are harboring sin in any way. "He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are; Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother" (1 John 3:8-10).

If you are not born again, you will not inherit the Kingdom of God. "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again" (John 3:3).

Oh, how I have been on my face before the Lord asking Him to search the depths of me! I had fallen away from the true heart and complete mind change that the Lord requires of us. I continued to think that I could skirt by, just praying whenever I needed something, or just opening His word in church. It is not the church, the fellowship or its people that grows us up in His truth or that saves us. It is our hearts open before Him, crying out to the only one that can redeem us. It is constantly studying His word so that His truth can be revealed to us. It is true repentance! Please study His word for yourself and see what He will reveal to you.

"...unless you repent you will all likewise perish" (Luke 13:5).

Praise the Lord for Godly sorrow that I may be found blameless! Praise Him for His goodness and mercy! He is so awesome and faithful!

REV 2:4 'But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
REV 2:5 'Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you, and will remove your lampstand out of its place-- unless you repent.
REV 2:6 'Yet this you do have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
REV 2:7 'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God.'

I think you've fallen in love again!!

Thanks Mom for the verses! Those are great...there are so many. Here's more:

"Repent therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come forth from the presence of the Lord." (Acts 3:19)

"And the times of ignorance God winked at; but now commands all men everywhere to repent." (Acts 17:30)

I love the illustration of the bomb. I think I will have to borrow that one!

Praise the Lord for His lovingkindness leads to repentence and in repentence is quietness, strength and rest. (Isaiah 30:15...lisa translation)

"I developed a deepened fear of God that swept over me like a tidal wave!"

This is exactly what happened to me during and after the "Deeper" conference last weekend. Are you familiar with Paul Washer?? If not, check out the video at the bottom of my blog! I believe your spirit will understand his.

On Monday and Tue when I returned, I was so broken and "fearful" and "trembling" before God that I was litterally having difficulty getting through the day. However, I am grateful for the conviction and newly opened eyes to the Holiness of God and the wrtchedness of me.

Thanks for sharing these posts...they verbalize what I have been trying to say on my blog...although by the silence...I'm not sure it is wringing true with anyone else. That's okay...I only want to be true to Him and preach Christ Crucified to All in order that SOME might be saved.

God bless you.
